Call 911 first if a child or anyone at risk is inside. If not, try the free options before you pay anyone. Many Auburn drivers already have a free way in and do not know it. A licensed locksmith is the right call when those run out.

Straight Answer

  • Child or at-risk person inside? Call 911 now. Do not wait for a locksmith.
  • Check every door and try your car's app. Both cost nothing.
  • AAA Alabama covers keys locked in the passenger area. You need your card and ID.
  • On campus, Tiger Rescue helps for free on weekdays, but not on game days.
  • Do not count on police. Alabama departments have split on this.
  • Hiring a locksmith? Get the price first and ask for the AESBL badge.

You shut the door and see the keys on the seat. We are locksmiths, and we are still not always your best first call. The order below can save you a service call.

If Someone Is Inside, Call 911 First

This is not a locksmith job. Our typical response is 15 to 30 minutes. A closed car in the sun can get dangerous sooner than that.

Alabama law gives 911 a clear job here. Section 6-5-332.5 of the Alabama Code covers a child under nine or an incapacitated person left in a vehicle. Once someone reports it, a public safety official must immediately dispatch a locksmith or a towing company with lockout tools.

The same section says when a person may force entry and be immune from criminal liability for the damage. All of these must be true.

  • A public safety official directs you to enter.
  • The car is locked, or the person has no reasonable way out.
  • You believe in good faith that they face imminent harm.
  • You call first and stay in contact until they are safe.
  • You use no more force than you need.
  • You stay with them nearby until responders arrive.

The law presumes a car at 99 degrees or less inside is safe. Treat that as a legal line, not a medical one. The lead author of a Stanford study on parked cars said children have died on days as cool as 70 degrees.

Minutes for a closed car to pass 99 degrees Our math from the Stanford study rate of 6.25 degrees per 5 minutes in the first 20 minutes. Starting at 72 degrees outside, about 22 minutes. At 80 degrees, about 15 minutes. At 90 degrees, about 7 minutes. At 96 degrees, about 2 minutes. Minutes to Alabama's 99 Degree Line Closed car on a sunny day, starting at the outside temperature. Our math. 72 degrees outside 80 degrees outside 90 degrees outside 96 degrees outside about 22 min about 15 min about 7 min about 2 min 0 5 10 15 20 min
Based on the closed window rate in the 2005 Pediatrics study, 6.25 degrees per 5 minutes over the first 20 minutes. The test used a dark sedan on 16 sunny days, so treat these as rough times.

The study also found that cracked windows did not meaningfully slow the rise. On average, the inside climbed about 40 degrees in an hour. About 80 percent of that came in the first 30 minutes.

Kids can also lock themselves in. NoHeatStroke.org counts 1,070 U.S. child deaths in hot cars since 1998, as of September 2026. It says 23.8 percent of those children got into the car on their own. Its 2026 table lists two deaths in Alabama.

The statute does not name pets. Call 911 for a pet in danger too, and follow what the dispatcher says.

The Free Fixes to Try in Five Minutes

Nobody is at risk? Good. Now slow down. These three steps cost nothing.

  1. Pull every handle. Include the back doors, the hatch and the tailgate.
  2. Think about the spare. A roommate or relative with a key may beat any service call.
  3. Open your car's app. It works only if you set it up before today.

Apps have limits. Ford says remote unlock is not standard on all its vehicles. The car needs an active modem and must be added to the app. On GM cars, OnStar says you need a properly equipped car and a paid plan. OnStar members can also call 1-888-466-7827. OnStar says more than 40,000 drivers a month, around the world, lock their keys inside and call it for help.

AAA Alabama

The AAA Alabama Member Guide, dated May 2026, draws a line that matters. Keys in the passenger compartment get an entry attempt. If a locksmith is then needed to get in, that cost is fully covered or reimbursable.

Keys locked in the trunk, or lost or broken keys, fall under a cap. It is up to $60 for Classic, $100 for Plus and $150 for Premier.

There are a few traps.

  • You must be with the car and show your card and a matching photo ID. If they are in the locked car, say so when you call.
  • Without them at service time, you pay commercial rates.
  • A service fee applies during the first three days of a new membership.
  • If you pay a locksmith and want money back, get an itemized receipt. Turn it in to a branch within 60 days.
  • A reimbursement counts as one of your service calls for the year.

AAA's Auto Club App can hold a digital card. Set it up today, so your card is on your phone next time.

Alfa and Other Insurers

Alfa sells auto policies in Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi. Its roadside program pays for locksmith services, along with towing and fuel delivery. Alfa's guide says to call 1-800-964-2532 to activate it and that limits apply. Other insurers sell similar add-ons, so read your declarations page or call the number on your card.

On Campus, Try Tiger Rescue

Most lockout guides are written for anywhere. This one is for Auburn. Auburn University Parking Services runs Tiger Rescue, a free on-campus motorist help program. It opens vehicles when keys are locked inside.

  • Hours. Monday to Friday, 6am to 10pm.
  • Not on. Football game days, other special events, or when the university is closed.
  • Phone. (334) 844-4143 from quarter past 7am to quarter past 4pm, then (334) 740-2077.
  • Limits. No lockout help for vehicles with side air bags. You must sign a liability waiver.
  • Have ready. Your name, location, make, model, color and plate number.

Check your car for side air bags before you call. A game day lockout near campus needs another plan, so have one saved.

Will Auburn Police Unlock Your Car?

Do not plan on it unless it is an emergency. We could not find a published Auburn Police lockout policy. Call the department at (334) 501-3100 to ask.

Alabama has a reason for the confusion. A 2013 change added motor vehicles to the state's locksmith license law, and it named no police exemption. In May 2014, Locksmith Ledger reported that Anniston and Piedmont police would stop non-emergency unlocks. Oxford and Jacksonville said they would keep doing them. The state board later said it never meant to license police. So the answer changes from town to town.

What a Lockout Costs, and the $19 Trap

Alfa's roadside guide says locksmith services can run $50 to $100. Treat that as a ballpark, not our price. We quote your price on the phone before a technician rolls, and that quote is what you pay.

Be careful with very low ads. In 2016, the Ohio Attorney General reported suing one operation. Callers heard that picking a lock would cost $19, then often paid far more. The local-sounding numbers rang at an out-of-state call center. Our own search reports show people typing "$29 car lockout service near me" as of November 2026, so that bait still works on people.

Alabama's board gives a better script in its consumer tips.

  1. Give the exact make and model. Ask for as firm a quote as possible.
  2. Ask if there is a trip charge.
  3. Ask if they are licensed in Alabama and truly in your area.
  4. When they arrive, ask to see the ID badge from the board.
  5. Ask for the on-site amount before any work starts.
  6. If it is higher than the quote, ask what you owe if you say no.

Do Not Pry the Door

A coat hanger looks cheap. It often is not. Hogan and Sons, a repair chain, says door latches are built to hold in a crash, so prying just gets you a damaged door. It adds that anti-theft guards now block slim jims inside the door. You are more likely to break the lock parts than reach them.

Side air bags raise the stakes. They are the reason Tiger Rescue will not open those cars. Our car lockout service uses professional entry tools to open a car without scratching paint or bending the frame. If your key is lost and not just locked inside, we can cut and program a new one on site. See key replacement, or our post on locksmith vs dealer.

Set This Up Before It Happens

  1. Save a licensed locksmith in your phone. The Alabama board tells people to do this too.
  2. Add your car to its app and turn on remote unlock.
  3. Put your AAA card in the Auto Club App.
  4. Save both Tiger Rescue numbers if you park on campus.
  5. Give a spare key to someone in town, and keep your phone in your pocket when you get out.

A spare made today costs a fraction of a lockout call at night. Down to one key? Fix that first.
